Then you mirror that off the court. Who negotiated in 2018 for the only NFL player to invest and buy 1% of the Bucks, Aaron Rodgers, being Aaron Rodgers, whose genius was that? Then Chris Middleton next to him, which is almost the same, who are these high quality character folks who happen to be all stars in skill level. So, we continue to want to make this a place where players are like, "Shit, I've never been treated like this.". As commissioner of one of New York Citys longstanding pickup basketball games, Dan Feigin always knew where he would be every Saturday morning: inside the subterranean gymnasium at Trevor Day School in Manhattan, where he has worked for nearly three decades as a teacher, coach and administrator. High draft picks such as Andrew Bogut, Yi Jianlian, Joe Alexander and Brandon Jennings hadn't panned out. Right? Talk about that process. Peter Feigin has been the President of the Milwaukee Bucks since October 2014. It was, like you couldn't even, if you had a thousand scenarios, of what the last year could be for the Milwaukee Bucks and what you're kind of thinking about and dealing with, it's just been a pretty incredible ride and ton of emotion. This is a human business. It found him. If you're going to go look at teams, grab my brother. I think, listen, you could certainly have success with superpower and great skill and everything, but to have peopleYou mentioned at the beginning of the show, how in a small market, do you keep consistency? Youre going to have a lot of fun. Michael Red: The facilities, everything that you guys have done so far is remarkable. Peter Feigin, president of the Milwaukee Bucks. Peter: Probably, now with the way interesting curriculum has expanded and fun case studies and like where schools are. Peter: I think when the opportunity came and we thought it was such a good idea, we were aiming an incredible. Theres a lot of people that look up to you and want to be either the next Peter Feigin, or be an entrepreneur and do a startup. And a diverse community gives us diverse thought, gives us better outcomes. Ive had some of my employees have been there and they say, its just amazing, just a wonderful place to watch a sporting event and Im just talking to one this morning and he just said, Great place, just a great arena. Were not going to go through this interview without talking, of course, about Giannis. Here's your Asian Americans. It's about doing things for the right reasons. I mean, from the local barber shops to the local business leaders, to having owners that are from Wisconsin. Peter Feigin: Yeah. You talked about the head of human capital, and obviously Im proud to say, and Im only saying this with love, youre a native New Yorker like I am and were people, people. We had Chris Middleton and Giannis involved in it kind of conceptually, and really fun conversations with Giannis brother Costas had just won for the Lakers the year before. He ends up being a generational player like you couldnt, if you were writing a Disney movie, which they have now written and now produced, it would be the fodder for a Disney. The one thing about you that I've seen over the years is that you keep the culture in a funny mood, right? It has huge value and its paid huge returns for us. We had this, I think it was an intern, said to us like, Well, we should, have you read about ghost kitchens? Of course were sitting there going like, eh, kind of like, we dont know what the hell youre talking about. For naming rights, Feiginsaid the franchise is looking for an international brand willing to spend $7 million to $10 million annually for 20 years. That's what and that's ongoing. Okay. I encourage it, and selfishly, its a fun way to network and deal with people. And have you seen that shift a little bit in the city since Milwaukee is kind of spearheading that, the Bucks? Youve collected all this human capital, both starting and back up. And we come from a city that's the urban city is 40% African American and probably 20% Hispanic, right? I think its hard to grasp where this is going, but it professionalizes players at this, Peter: point teenagers at a much earlier level than theyve ever been. I got to talk about the journey to the Bucks though. Peter Feigin: So, I mean, this is talk about, "You never know what's going to happen and where." Peter Feigin: No. "It's going to be a blow-away experience beyond expectations for anybody that's been to a pro sporting event in the state of Wisconsin, that's for sure," Feigin says. There's no way that the reverence, the likeability and kind of the coolness of the Milwaukee can't be a team and a city that the whole world cheers for in such a big way. And more importantly, kind of like building such a strong infrastructure with other people. We're going to build it locally, regionally, nationally and then internationally. Talk about that, Peter. Then it would move the franchise to Las Vegas or Seattle. Peter Feigin: I think we have a good structure with Jon Horst, who's really our GM and kind of really runs the basketball day-to-day. I volunteered/got myself pushed into the reset committee of the bubble committee on the NBA to do something that's never been done before. And I think of it, Michael, to answer the second part, it's like we thought we were woke. So it was kind of building rapport and trust was the only way to kind of get this done. Not everyone is. So, it really is kind of like all of us working together to figure out what the balance is. We hired a great human capital person to build up the structure, but it was really best practice. So, you take away every form of a 20- to 30-year-old's life outside of basketball, you take away their family in a big way and by the way, then you isolate them, in basically like a stay at home kind of mode in the middle of a pandemic and really like social justice, kind of uprising while they're locked into a bubble. "Now we have to monitor and figure out and organize the groups that travel from Greece to away games and organize the meet-and-greets after the game, which by the way, aren't scheduled. A, if you werent doing this and I know this is a dream job. Got it. You talk about your operating board committee, youve got these Masters of the Universe, and really you start with the answer. And what sort of plan could we have when there was some sort of light at the end of the tunnel to kind of ramp back up in a big way. Its certainly an example of how do you keep the entrepreneurial spirit in an organization and what better way to do it with chicken, and its great chicken. Youre physically building an arena, a district, a template for success. Were going to constantly improve. Number one, obviously, because like you said, its rare air, but youre learning on the job. You and I go back since you came back to the Bucks or since you came to the Bucks and you guys have been incredible to me over the years since you've been in a position in Milwaukee and really grateful of our friendship over the years and how the organization has welcomed me back to the organization. Peter is a serious businessman and an hilarious friend. Talk a little bit about where you even grew up, how you even got here. Peter Feigin: And I think, even when we looked at ourselves we're completely diverse, but we weren't anywhere near where we should have been on the leadership side of being a diverse leadership. But, boy, you talk about how you go to sleep like the night, a night in March, in the middle of March last year thinking like, "Oh, my God. Michael Red: I don't know if that's the responsibility of the organization to have that permeate throughout the city, but have you seen a shift in Milwaukee, even when it comes to people coming together from different races and different creeds? Feigin, who had held executive positions at Madison Square Garden, Marquis Jet Partners and NetJets, packed up his New York home and went to Milwaukee in 2014. Right now, its very hard to figure out and understand where its going, because this is the wild West. Peter Feigin: Khris Middleton, as you can imagine, nobody understands that players have been having to get COVID tested twice a day and you got to come into our training center and we have parking spaces. Michael Red: I'm a big believer that the healthier the person, the healthier the product, healthier the business. One Saturday, they gathered with some of their other pals including dAmboise, who had been playing hoops with them for years and The Run was born. We screw around a hell of a lot, but let me tell you, if one of our guys was in trouble, if we need to circle the wagons, if they need advice on evaluating something they're doing, they know that it's extremely objective, it's immediate, and that's what we do here. Feigin says Bucks Gaming will consist of roughly 10 full-time employees, including the team's five players, who will be housed by the franchise. Talk about the special, the specialness of how you were involved with designing the championship ring, because theres a lot of thought that you guys put into that ring. Id like to do that ring ceremony for hourly staff every day and the world would be a good place. Either it came from Khris Middleton or Jack [crosstalk 00:02:21]. Peter: Thats great, thats one of the only times that questions been asked.
